Why Goode is Good.

What has this country come to? The future of our nations economy and welfare has been trumped by the wanting to be overly careful concerning the environment. In a world where large businesses are not responsible for their own actions. Theses are the things that the current president has implemented and have been the downfall of this nation. In order to solve these problems we need a man who is not scared to get his hands dirty. This man is Virgil Goode. 

Obama fully supported the bailout of the auto industry. This caused the U.S. Government to spend upwards of hundreds of billions of dollars to save an industry that had brought this debt upon itself. Is this the sign of strength? The current president is saying that large business in this country is not responsible for there actions. Virgil Goode is whole-heartedly against the auto industry bailout. This would allow the auto industry to suffer for their wrong and make an example so that no other big business would handle their money as poorly as they had. 

The current president has rules in place so that we are not allowed to mine any of the oil opportunities within the United States. This increased our dependency on foreign oil and sends money outside of the United States. The only other opposition to mining American oil could be the want to preserve natural beauty which is not a very good argument. This is a major thing I do not like about Barak Obama. Virgil Goode would promote the mining of American oil and other recourses. This would not only stimulate the economy and create jobs but it would also enable the government to raise tax on oil and decrease the national debt. There is no substitute for this policy in my opinion and I strongly oppose anyone who opposes the mining of American recourses because there is simply no substitute. 

There is no substitute for Virgil Goode. Any substitute is inadequate.

The Making of an American

Becoming an American. The story of finding cultural identity is not a pretty one. One must first reject the idea of the old identity and then take on the affirmative identity. The story of Henry D. Schuster is one of love, death, life, and of finding ones self. Henry, a boy born in a small town in Germany in 1926 lived a simple life. He spent large amounts of time with his family and studying the Jewish Culture. Everything was perfect until 1933 when Adolf Hitler rose to power as the German Chancellor. When Hitler began placing rules that Jews were to be treated as second class citizens Henry's life changed. Henry soon lost his father to a beating received by Non-Jewish settlers in the town. As Hitler changed his methods from ill treatment to full on extermination Henry was forced into many different orphanages and his mother and sisters killed. He ran from orphanage to orphanage avoiding Nazis left and right. He was granted the opportunity to board a ship for America and his life changed forever...
He arrived at Ellis Island and worked until he could find the closest relatives of his. When he finally found them he was despised for being an outsider. He was despised because he did not speak English well. He was despised because he was not an American. Again, Henry's life changed. He had always wanted to gain citizenship but had not had the incentive. Now he had a means. This sudden burst of Patriotism caused Henry to join the military to kill the Nazis that killed his family. He learned English very quickly and was well liked by most of the soldiers he came in contact with. He felt like an American and through interaction and the correct thought process became American.
Henry and I have a direct relation. He is my 3rd Cousin. I can not say that I have ever experienced anything remotely close to what Henry has but the basics of out struggles can be perceived to be similar in my eyes. Henry learned what it meant to be a Jewish American. I learned what it means to be a man when my father had passed away. Both Henry and I had suffered tremendous loss and come back from it and made a positive situation. While Henry was making his new life as an American, I was raising my sister as I would like to think my father would have. We both understood that things generally perceived as bad can also be perceived as a learning experience that is positive. The process of growth into a man and the process of growing in an American. Both of the preceding are parts of our identity. This is what Henry's message was. The message of taking negative events and using them to find one selves true purpose and abilities. The message of becoming what you want. The message of choice.

Speaker - The speaker is an aged Henry Schuster. A man who has come to learn much about himself throughout the reminiscing required to write what he did. A man narrating his own life from the first person. At times he is a young German boy and at others a proud American man.
Occasion - The Second World War. Saying that this piece took place during the Holocaust would be a inaccurate statement. Although, the first half of the book is described as in a small town in Germany during the Holocaust. It then transitions into a broader setting of World War Two America. The book begins in 1926 when the author was born. This is a time of post World War One tension. This tension translates into World War Two and throughout the book.
Audience - Henry intends for all to read his book, young and old. His story is one to be told throughout time. It is directed to anyone who has ever felt alone, lost, or like a stranger. It is a true story of a life hard lived.
Purpose - Henry, like many other Holocaust survivors has a melancholy and powerful story. Henry was determined to get his published because there was greater meaning to his story. Not only did he survive, not only did he escape to America, but he learned the meaning of cultural identity and what it means to be an American.
Style - The story was very straightforward, just like his life had been. The language was fairly basic seeing that Henry's first language is not English. No bag was held over the readers eyes to mask the terrific story that was Henry's.
Tone - The story was left with many blanks, leaving the reader to think them through and create a story that he or she choses to believe. The overall tone was a tone of choice. There was a tone of choice for the reader to fill in gaps in the story just as there were choices in Henry's life that although were difficult had to be done.

A brief reflection

Reflection on Outliers

The science of success. Is there anything deeper than simple hard work, determination, and dedication? In the book “Outliers” by Malcomb Gladwell clears up any confusion about the science of success that you may have had prior to reading. 

The summer of Junior year, a time to be lazy, carefree, and freak out about a book you must read and annotate. The above sums up my summer. I’ll never forget where I was. Sitting in my makeshift room in my grandparents house I had a faint thought about summer reading. I passed off the idea at first. Would I really have been assigned more than one book this year for summer reading. I debated with myself, self convincing not to check online but after about thirty minutes of self-dispute I decided to do so. I was in for quite the rude awakening. I had less than a month before my summer had ended and I most certainly did not want to spend it reading a stupid book on the study of success. I went through denial first, then anger, and finally acceptance. By the  time I had picked up the book I had given up and decided to just get it over with. I opened the first page and began to read.

When I first got into it I thought quite a bit of the book. The Roseto Study proved to be of quite some interest to me. It had opened a world of new ideas to me. “What if our heritage is what makes us... us?” My new ideas were soon crushed by the next chapter, The 10,000 Hours Rule. “Wait a second, so our heritage makes us successful but we also have to work our butts off to get there?” The book was starting to come together. It was all making sense. Our surroundings give us our work ethic, which give us the will to master our trades and become successful. The lightbulb had illuminated. The book was starting to make sense. At this point Outliers had started to become repetitive. The themes were all reoccurring and painfully easy to find. Gladwell began beating this figurative horse. I understood how cultural heritage and the right opportunities from those around you decide where you will go in life. Now the literary work was no longer sending a message but rather adding as much supporting evidence as possible until the reader wanted to gauge his eyes out. 

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That is the saying.  The slow decline of the quality of the work had profound effects on my the way I thought. As the book got worse, I got better. The boredom that accompanied the reoccurring themes brought me to scour the book for new themes that I may not have caught the first time. I became slightly obsessed. I thought about my surroundings and my cultural heritage. I went to bed thinking about the book. I thought of how to improve my chances. I was striving to be the definition of an Outlier. I substituted mindless dramas and other TV shows for educational readings and articles of interest. I began to apply the book to real life scenarios. Through my boredom, entertainment was achieved. 

The work Outliers is a book of layers, a book of levels, a book of stages. There is a message sent to the reader. This message is not expressed as part of the book but rather as an interpretation of the book. Gladwell subliminally wants you to analyze your surroundings. He wants to make you aware. The statistical way of thinking brought forward by Gladwell is beneficial when wanting to change the self. This is his goal. He wants you to sit back and think about your life, your work, and your heritage and be grateful. This is a sign of true literary mastery. The writer is not trying to tell the writer a story but rather to change the writer and inspire him to create his own story.
